| Zusammenfassung | As our population ages, concerns about cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases grow more pressing. These conditions not only affect individuals, but place significant strain on healthcare systems, families, and society as a whole. Emerging research supports a strong relationship between diet, lifestyle, and healthy brain ageing, with a particular focus on the gut microbiome - the diverse community of microorganisms living in our gastrointestinal tract. With advancing age, our gut microbiome undergoes changes influenced by various factors, including diet and lifestyle. Unfortunately, these changes often lead to reduced resilience and increased susceptibility to health issues. Recent studies suggest that a healthy gut microbiome could hold the key to promoting cognitive health and longevity (1). Dietary interventions targeting the gut microbiome, including prebiotic fibre, therefore hold promise in delaying the onset, or slow the progression, of age-associated cognitive decline. Prebiotics provide essential nutrients for beneficial gut bacteria, promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that play a crucial role in maintaining gut health and reducing inflammation - an important aspect of healthy ageing (2). Our project, BiomeBakery, aims to harness these scientific insights by developing an innovative prebiotic-fortified bakery product tailored to the needs and preferences of the ageing UK population. By partnering with leading food manufacturer Puratos, we aim to create a product that seamlessly integrates into individuals' daily routines, offering a familiar, convenient, and enjoyable sensory experience. With our partners, University of Reading and Thriva Health, we will then demonstrate the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of our product. Specifically, we will assess if our bakery product, enriched with prebiotic fibre, can improve cognitive function, mood, and inflammation in older adults. By focusing on preventive strategies in midlife and beyond, the BiomeBakery project aims to address the growing public health challenge of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. Beyond public health benefits, our project is poised to have broader impacts, including UK economic growth, cost savings to NHS and private healthcare systems, and environmental and social benefits. Our innovation sits at the intersection of three rapidly growing global markets - longevity and cognitive health, prebiotics, and functional food markets - and represents a revenue opportunity of £24 million within the first 12 months.
